Systems Architect Job Description


In their primary role, systems architects, also known as computer systems analysts, develop hardware, software, and network systems. They are responsible for the implementation, maintenance and operation of these systems. Systems architects customize systems to meet the needs of specific customers. They manage the backup of these systems, troubleshoot problems, provide solutions, and ensure that system development follows industry standards. In addition, systems architects analyze the costs of developing information systems.

System architects can work in the IT departments of any type of company. As reported by the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), an employment growth rate of 9% is expected for this profession until 2024. A continued reliance on reliable computer systems, an increase in the use of electronic registration systems and a growing use of cloud computing is believed to be a factor in this projected employment growth rate.

Duties and responsibilities of the systems architect

Create computer systems

System architects are primarily responsible for creating specifications such as network and security interface designs, architecture diagrams, applications and systems. This process includes assessing a company's technical needs and integrating these systems as needed.

Evaluate and update systems

In some cases, it is not necessary to develop a new system from scratch. System architects evaluate a company's existing systems and provide updates to hardware, software, operating systems, and other areas.

Evaluate system design or upgrade costs

Before creating a new system or updating an existing system, a systems architect typically prepares an operating cost report. This report will include cost estimates for system solutions and implementation processes.

Test and implement IT systems

Once a new system has been created, the system architects are responsible for testing the compatibility of these systems and for detecting and correcting any errors. Systems architects also oversee the implementation of new and updated systems.
