Duties and Responsibilities of the Field Service Technician

Field service technicians install, troubleshoot, maintain, and repair equipment, which may include electronic, telecommunications, or equipment. Retail companies, cable companies, and service companies hire field service technicians to work full time, usually the first shift of the week. Field service technicians travel to customer homes and businesses to repair and install equipment and generally work independently with little daily supervision. Finally, the field service technicians report to the service manager.

Duties and Responsibilities of the Field Service Technician
The daily activities of field service technicians vary based on the equipment they work with and the number of service calls they answer in a day. However, these basic tasks are the same in most companies:

Install the equipment

Field service technicians install the equipment and show customers how to use it.

Troubleshooting and repair of equipment

Field service technicians troubleshoot equipment issues to determine the cause of reported problems. Once the problem is identified, they repair the equipment to restore full functionality. They also perform routine preventive maintenance.

Keep records

Field service technicians write records of every service call they make and add notes to customer records.

Advise customers

Field service technicians show customers how to use the equipment and advise them on best practices to get their equipment working well.

Conduct demos

Field service technicians demonstrate equipment capabilities to customers and demonstrate how to perform various tasks, including simple maintenance.

Maintain inventory

Field service technicians keep inventory in their service trucks and order new items when supplies run out.

Service vehicle maintenance

Field service technicians keep service vehicles clean and organized and refuel as needed.
