In their primary role, database administrators oversee an organization's data storage and retrieval system. They can also be called database administrators. Database administrators ensure the security of stored data by implementing security programs. They also design disaster recovery plans, update databases as needed, install and test new software, and run backup programs to prevent data loss. Database administrators also evaluate the needs of the business with respect to data storage and access and create databases to meet these needs.

As reported by the Bureau of Labor Statistics, DBA employment is expected to grow 11% through 2024. The continuing need to organize and present data is one of the main reasons cited for this projected growth. DBAs employed in the IT design area can expect to see a 26% job growth rate over the same time period, due to the rise of cloud computing.

Develop and update databases

Database administrators are primarily responsible for creating new databases or updating existing ones for large or small businesses. They manage databases, verify data accessibility, and troubleshoot new systems as needed.

It is the responsibility of database administrators to ensure that a company's data is protected from hackers and possible breaches. They evaluate different types of security programs and choose the ones that best suit the needs of the particular database they are monitoring.

Evaluate the needs of the company

A database administrator meets with analysts, business managers, and other personnel to determine specific database needs. They update and update databases to meet your employer's continuing needs.

Create disaster recovery plans

In the event of a disaster, companies often have disaster recovery plans in place to archive and restore data. It is up to DBAs to develop these types of emergency data access plans and test them to make sure they are reliable and efficient.
