Duties and responsibilities of the Electrical Drafter

Electrical designers prepare and draw technical drawings for electrical systems. They typically work on power generation and transmission projects rather than consumer-scale electrical projects. Electrical drafters tend to work closely with architects and engineers to develop specifications and translate them into functional documents that guide the installation and maintenance of electrical wiring. Many electrical designers also develop specification sheets and documentation related to power transmission and wiring.

This role requires a thorough understanding of electrical transmission principles, along with the ability to analyze information and present it in a clear and accessible manner to guide electricity procurement work.

Duties and responsibilities of the electrical drafter

Typical tasks for an electrical designer may vary slightly, but their main tasks tend to involve:

Design and draw wiring diagrams.

Electrical designers develop wiring diagrams throughout the project life cycle. These diagrams include a master drawing showing structures and wiring systems, as well as detailed drawings illustrating electrical connections, distances, and landscape features that should be considered during the planning phase. Electrical designers can also prepare drawings that illustrate electrical connections and equipment.

Calculate material and transmission needs

Electrical designers work closely with engineers, architects, and technicians to determine project specifications and functional requirements. They review proposed sites and projects to determine energy needs and generate estimates for materials such as cables or underground pipes. Electrical designers tend to work with engineers throughout the project, as power needs can change as work progresses.

Develop technical specification guides

Once the functional requirements for a power transmission project have been compiled, electrical designers develop and prepare guidelines for technical specifications. They can put together a series of documents to guide the installation and maintenance of power lines. This requires a high level of attention to detail, as electrical drafters check technical documents to ensure a high level of accuracy.

Direct electrical installers

Electrical designers also work closely with contractors and installers throughout the project life cycle. Early in the process, they review documents and diagrams with installers, answering questions related to materials or energy needs. Then, they inspect contractors' work to make sure they are following patterns and adhering to specifications.

Solve electrical planning problems

Finally, electrical designers collaborate with technicians, engineers, and contractors to solve electrical problems that arise during the project life cycle. For example, a contractor may inform an engineer that he cannot follow current specifications due to unforeseen circumstances; the electrical designer will review the drawings and return them to the engineer for approval.
