Duties and Responsibilities of the Database Analyst

Database analysts organize and make sense of collections of information to create functional database systems. They evaluate, design, review and implement databases. They are also hired to maintain and update existing databases to better meet the needs of businesses. Database analysts can also play a role in database security and help train employees on the proper use of databases.

Database analysts do much of their work independently, but they should regularly check database management and administrators to make sure they are collecting and organizing information in the way that the business requires. The latest projections from the Bureau of Labor Statistics indicate that DBAs will see 11% employment growth through 2024. This will create approximately 13,400 jobs during this period.

Duties and Responsibilities of the Database Analyst

The duties and responsibilities of a database analyst vary from project to project and from company to company. However, there are several basic functions common to almost all database analysts. A review of the current worklists identified the following basic duties and responsibilities.

Organize your data

Database analysts must be able to collect relevant information and organize it in a logical and functional way. They will consult with management or administrators to determine what data should be included in the database system and then find the best ways to organize and store this information. They often create flowcharts and diagrams during this data construction phase to illustrate how the data will be sorted and stored.

Design and implement databases

Most database analysts should design and implement a database system after working on organizing the data. They need to be up to date on the latest database creation practices and trends to perform these tasks. They must also master one or more programming languages, such as SQL, an industry standard.

Actions on documents

Documentation is a very important part of the database analyst's job. Every aspect of a database must be carefully recorded. These documents will serve as a reference for new hires and future system maintenance. Therefore, database analysts must be able to communicate well through writing and be able to create flowcharts and diagrams.

Secure databases and tests

All databases must be tested for functionality and accuracy. Database analysts can run tests before a new system is released, as well as periodic tests on existing systems to ensure they are functioning satisfactorily. They can also establish security systems to prevent unauthorized users from accessing the information contained in the database.
